Fix "Storage Full": Expand Internal Storage on Chromecast with Google TV
A complete hardware guide via USB-C Hub (Updated 2026 Method)
Hey everyone, if you are using the Chromecast with Google TV, you already know its biggest flaw: the microscopic 4.4 GB of usable internal storage. After installing just a few high-quality streaming applications and media players, you are immediately hit with the dreaded "Storage Almost Full" warning. Today, I will show you exactly how I bypassed this limitation using a simple hardware trick.
Hardware Requirements
- USB-C Hub with Power Delivery (PD): This is crucial. The hub MUST have a PD port to pass power through to the Chromecast.
- High-Speed USB Flash Drive: I highly recommend a USB 3.0 drive (formatted to FAT32) for fast application loading times.
- Higher Wattage Power Adapter (Optional but recommended): The stock Google adapter might struggle to power both the hub and the USB drive simultaneously.
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: The Connection
Plug your upgraded power adapter into the PD port of your USB-C Hub. Next, insert the Hub's main Type-C cable directly into your Chromecast dongle. Finally, plug your USB Flash Drive into one of the available ports on the hub.
Step 2: Formatting as Internal Storage
Turn on your TV and navigate to Settings > System > Storage. You should see your newly connected USB drive. Select it and click 'Erase & format as device storage'. Warning: This will wipe all existing data on the USB drive.
Step 3: Migrate Your Applications
Once formatting is complete, the system will ask if you want to move data now. Select 'Move now'. If you want to move specific apps manually later, go to Settings > Apps, select the application, click 'Storage used', and switch it from Internal Storage to your new USB drive.
If you encounter any formatting errors or your hub isn't passing power, drop a comment below and I will try to help out!
